\n\"Kerry<\/a>With a $6.3 million economic\u00a0impact on the Greenville\u00a0community, Artisphere<\/a> is the\u00a0annual arts and culture fair that\u2019s served as a\u00a0signature event since 2005. As executive\u00a0director, D.C.-area native Kerry Murphy is the\u00a0face behind making sure the event goes\u00a0smoothly. \u201cI have a real passion for Greenville,\u201d\u00a0she said. \u201cWorking for Artisphere makes me\u00a0feel ensconced in the community.\u201d
\nLast year the arts and culture event received\u00a0a record 1,090 applications for 135 booths.\u00a0The event also boasts being one of Top 20\u00a0events for the Southeastern Tourism Society<\/a>\u00a02016, one of 2015\u2019s Best Art Fairs as voted\u00a0by artfaircalendar.com<\/em><\/a> and one of 2016\u2019s\u00a0Top 10 Fine Art Shows according to Art\u00a0Fair Sourcebook<\/em><\/a>.
\nMurphy said her undergraduate and MBA<\/a>\u00a0work at Clemson, as well as the network she\u2019s\u00a0made over the past 20 years, have allowed her\u00a0to bring a balanced perspective to the event. She always works to maintain classic favorites people expect, but\u00a0she also wants to be on the edge of trends and broadening Greenville\u2019s acceptance of new artists and mediums.
\n\u201cI just have such a sense of pride. To be able to contribute to [the art scene] and know what our team does\u00a0has an impact just means a tremendous amount,\u201d she said.
\nMurphy said although she\u2019s structured and methodical, she wants the event to reflect the lively, energetic and\u00a0colorful personalities of not only herself and her team, but also the vibe of Greenville. \u201cI love attention to\u00a0detail. You\u2019ll find lots of little things in Artisphere that from a user perspective can have a big impact,\u201d she said.
\nEven though the event is only in May, Greenville visitors can create a \u201cmini-Artisphere<\/a>\u201d experience just by\u00a0taking a trip through downtown, Murphy said. \u201cJust visit a local restaurant or take a walk through the open\u00a0studios in the fall,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is a good mix of stuff for every level of interest.\u201d
\nMurphy was lured to the upstate after she saw a glossy Clemson<\/a> brochure a friend had during their senior\u00a0year of high school. \u201cI went to the career center and looked it up \u2014 I want to say \u2018Googled\u2019 it, but I\u2019m not even\u00a0sure what we did before Google,\u201d laughed Murphy. \u201cI kind of always knew I wanted to go away to college. \u2026\u00a0When I saw Tillman [Hall] and Bowman [Field] I knew immediately this is where I was going to go. It had a\u00a0warmth about it.\u201d
\nAs a member of the Student Alumni Council<\/a>, she saw first-hand how influential a Clemson network could\u00a0be even though she hadn\u2019t settled on a career path. \u201cWe were celebrating the 100th anniversary [of the\u00a0University] and traveling to different clubs, and I went to Florence. That experience is where I had the \u2018a-ha\u2019\u00a0moment about the power of the alumni network. People who didn\u2019t know me were offering to assist me. Just\u00a0their willingness to help you out because of a shared affection for an alma mater was just powerful.\u201d\u00a0Murphy makes sure to pay that forward through her work in Artisphere and as a sorority adviser.
\n\u201cNonprofit work can be very rewarding. I would, as a tip, suggest to students an internship. It was more rare\u00a0when I was a student, but start internships as soon as freshman year,\u201d she said. \u201cInterns at a nonprofit really\u00a0become part of the team, and working as an intern means you get to know the board of directors and make\u00a0connections even before you\u2019re out of school.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
