But Lesley A.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Ross, Clemson\u2019s new SmartLIFE<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Endowed Chair in Aging and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Cognition, says scholarship and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>research in the area of older<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>adults can\u2019t just be about a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>number.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cLongevity is easy to quantify, but<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>older adults don\u2019t focus as much<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>on age as they do on quality of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>life,\u201d Ross said. \u201cMy research, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the work of this position, focuses<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>on keeping older adults happy and independent as long as possible<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>while fighting the negative<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>stereotypes associated with aging.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe new endowed chair<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>has been created specifically to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>research aging and its effects on<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>issues related to brain<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>function. Ross, who comes to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Clemson from Penn State, will be<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>a tenured faculty member in the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Department of Psychology and will work collaboratively across the University on research related<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to aging and cognition.
