In honor of the gift, the\u00a0program will be named the Class of 1963 Bridge to Clemson University.<br \/>\nThe Bridge program is a distinctive academic-transfer program\u00a0available by invitation only. Beginning with a strong first-year academic\u00a0experience at Tri-County Technical\u00a0College, it incorporates dedicated\u00a0academic advising, student support services\u00a0and a student life component \u2014 all of which\u00a0are designed to help students succeed\u00a0academically and transfer to Clemson.<br \/>\nThe class also presented a check for\u00a0$6.6 million, representing the total amount\u00a0class members have given since graduation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div   class='hr hr-full hr-no-shadow   avia-builder-el-1  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Circle-SAZ-ZETA\" src=\"http:\/\/clemsonworld.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Circle-SAZ-ZETA1.jpg\" width=\"710\" height=\"258\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Sigma Alpha Zeta fraternity provides library presentation room<\/h3>\n<p>In August 2012, members of Sigma Alpha Zeta (1959-1970), Clemson \u2019s first documented\u00a0social fraternity, gathered for the dedication of the SAZ Room in Cooper Library, which provides state-of-the-art media technology for students to use in planning, preparing and practicing class presentations\u00a0and assignments. Led by Library Ambassador Lewis Horton \u201966, Winston Fowler \u201962 and George \u201cTurk\u201d\u00a0Matthews \u201969, the group donated more than $57,000. Sigma Alpha Zeta became affiliated with the\u00a0national fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha in 1970.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div   class='hr hr-full hr-no-shadow   avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6500\" alt=\"Circle-CaughmanLeaf\" src=\"http:\/\/clemsonworld.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Circle-CaughmanLeaf-300x205.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"164\" \/>N.C. resident leaves\u00a0$1.2 million to Clemson<\/h3>\n<p>Clemson has received a be quest of more\u00a0than $1.2 million from the estate of the late Caroline\u00a0Barton Caughman, formerly of Pinehurst, N.C.\u00a0The gift will be\u00a0used to establish a\u00a0university scholarship\u00a0endowment and to\u00a0benefit the library.<br \/>\n[pullquote align=&#8217;right&#8217; font=&#8217;chunk&#8217; color=&#8217;#562E19&#8242;]\u201cPlanned gifts like\u00a0this bequest are the\u00a0reason why Clemson\u00a0exists today,\u201d[\/pullquote] said\u00a0President Jim Barker. \u201cLike our founders, Thomas Green\u00a0and Anna Calhoun Clemson, the Caughmans must have\u00a0placed a high value on education, and we appreciate\u00a0them for having the forethought to plan this bequest.\u201d<br \/>\nCaroline was the widow of Clemson alumnus\u00a0Kenneth Gladstone Caughman, who earned his\u00a0mechanical engineering degree in 1948. Born in\u00a0Hartwell, Ga., she grew up in Anderson and worked for\u00a0Southern Bell Telephone Co. before their marriage in\u00a01947. The two were married 51 years.<br \/>\nThe Caughmans\u00a0were avid supporters\u00a0of Clemson athletics\u00a0and IPTAY members\u00a0for more than 30\u00a0years. \u201cKen was a true Tiger fan. He was fanatical\u00a0about Clemson, and that rubbed off on my sister,\u201d said\u00a0Don Barton, Caroline\u2019s brother. \u201cCaroline became very\u00a0devoted to Clemson, just as Ken was.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div   class='hr hr-full hr-no-shadow   avia-builder-el-5  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h3>Anonymous donor gives $1M\u00a0to establish scholarship and\u00a0professorship<\/h3>\n<p>An anonymous donor has given more\u00a0than $1 million to honor Samuel Lewis Bell \u201925,\u00a0longtime president of Chester Telephone Co.,\u00a0and his wife, Lucia Beason Bell.<br \/>\nThe gift will fund the Samuel Lewis Bell\u00a0and Lucia Beason Bell Memorial Scholarship\u00a0Endowment, which will provide scholarships\u00a0to undergraduates from the Chester area, and\u00a0to create the Samuel Lewis Bell Distinguished\u00a0Professorship, which will support an endowed\u00a0professorship in the Holcombe Department of\u00a0Electrical and Computer Engineering, part of\u00a0the College of Engineering and Science.<br \/>\nThe professorship will focus specifically on\u00a0optoelectronics, the study of the interaction of\u00a0light with electronic devices using photons and\u00a0electrons, and will work with COMSET, the\u00a0Center for Optical Materials Science and\u00a0Engineering Technologies.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div   class='hr hr-full hr-no-shadow   avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6501\" alt=\"David &amp; Cindy Lowery\" src=\"http:\/\/clemsonworld.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Circle-Lowery04-300x291.jpg\" width=\"216\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clemsonworld.wpenginepowered.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/08\/Circle-Lowery04-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/clemsonworld.wpenginepowered.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/08\/Circle-Lowery04-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/clemsonworld.wpenginepowered.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/08\/Circle-Lowery04.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/>Individuals Helping Individuals<\/h3>\n<p>For David Lowery \u201984 of Anderson , Clemson has always been a large\u00a0campus with a small feel.\u00a0He recalls traveling from his home state of Alabama with his dad for a campus visit\u00a0the summer before his freshman year, when a professor took him aside to help him\u00a0choose a major (chemical engineering).<br \/>\n\u201cThe people are my greatest memory,\u201d David said. \u201cThe interest the professors\u00a0had in us gave it the small feel. At Clemson, an individual can always find a way to\u00a0help an individual.\u201d<br \/>\nThat sentiment led him to sit down with Brian O\u2019Rourke, executive director of\u00a0development and alumni relations, over a burger at the Esso Club. [pullquote align=&#8217;left&#8217; font=&#8217;chunk&#8217; color=&#8217;#562E19&#8242;]David realized two\u00a0things: You can never pass up an Esso burger, and an unrestricted endowment would\u00a0be the best way to honor his philosophy of individuals helping individuals.[\/pullquote]<br \/>\nThe Lowerys established the Mr. and Mrs. David D. Lowery Family Scholarship\u00a0Endowment \u2014 a university-wide fund to award scholarships to deserving students\u00a0as needs arise. And because they wanted their contribution to have an immediate\u00a0impact on students, they chose to supplement\u00a0the endowment with an annual gift to provide\u00a0scholarships every year as the endowment matures.<br \/>\n\u201cWe wanted to do something that would help\u00a0those who otherwise may not be able to come to\u00a0Clemson,\u201d David said.<br \/>\nBeing a Tiger runs in the family. David\u2019s father, Ken Lowery, attended Clemson, and their two children, Whitney and Alex, are\u00a0current students.
