Before Dabo Swinney earned his 166th win as Clemson’s head football coach during the 2023 season, the longtime leader in head coaching wins for the program was Frank Howard (165 from 1940–69). Howard first arrived in Clemson in 1931 as an assistant football coach. He also had stints coaching track (1931–39) and baseball (1943). This rare archival photo is a celebration after Howard’s 163rd win as the Tigers’ head coach, a 21-10 victory against Georgia Tech played at Grant Field in Atlanta.
