After more than a decade of extraordinary leadership, Clemson University Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Robert H. “Bob” Jones ’79, M ’81 is preparing for retirement. His influence spans institutional transformation, academic excellence and a deep personal commitment to people and purpose.
For those aspiring to lead with impact, in higher education or any industry, Provost Jones shares six timeless lessons for creating a legacy that endures.
1. Follow your passion
Passion isn’t just a motivator; it’s a compass. “I came to Clemson University as an undergraduate student because of the Clemson Experimental Forest, a unique feature of the institution,” Jones said. Whether choosing a career path or considering a big move, let your passions guide you, as they’re often the clearest signal of where your lasting impact lies.
2. Lead with your core values
Core values are the bedrock of effective, enduring leadership and serve as touchstones for decision-making, communication and building trust. Returning to your core values will help you lead with clarity and conviction when faced with complex challenges. “At Clemson, we’re thinking about what’s right and what’s best, not what’s convenient,” Jones said. “That’s important and the mark of doing the right thing for people.”
3. Accept the highs and lows
Legacy leadership requires resilience, and it’s important to understand that setbacks, like successes, are part of the legacy you’ll leave. Leadership is not about avoiding storms, and you won’t get to lead only in the good times. Navigate through challenges with calmness, courage and focus.
4. Cultivate a community
As colleagues, you won’t always agree completely. But when disagreements happen, it’s best to sit down and work through issues to find a solution you can all stand behind. Great leaders know they don’t go at it alone and create a model of partnership and progress. Fostering an environment of mutual respect, open dialogue and shared decision-making builds consensus and trust.
5. Understand your impact on people
Maybe you can’t even imagine it, but as a leader, you will impact many people you collaborate and connect with. You’ll work alongside talented colleagues, partners and emerging professionals who are experts in their fields and exceptional individuals. Over time, many will look back and point to something you said, a decision you made or the way you showed up during a pivotal moment — and they’ll say it changed how they led, lived or thought.
6. Think long-term
Think about the ripple effects of your decisions. Legacy isn’t built in a moment; it’s shaped over time through intentional acts of service, stewardship and vision.

Provost Jones’ legacy at Clemson is etched in programs, people and principles, while his journey serves as a roadmap for anyone seeking to lead with lasting impact. Following your passion, staying rooted in your values, thinking long-term and never underestimating the power of personal connections and purpose is how legacies are made — and remembered.
