IPTAY’s former leader leaves a legacy of tradition, service

When it comes to epitomizing “A Clemson Man,” one would be hard-pressed to find a better example than George Bennett ’55.

Considered one of Clemson University’s greatest ambassadors, Bennett served the University in various capacities until his retirement in 2004. He passed away on December 13, 2025, at the age of 92.

Bennett’s dedication to his alma mater was highlighted by his work with Clemson Athletics, including two stints as executive director of IPTAY. His legacy lives on through one of Clemson’s time-honored traditions.

When Georgia Tech wanted to end its football series against Clemson, Bennett encouraged Tiger fans to use $2 bills as they traveled to Atlanta for the 1977 game against Tech. It was a way to demonstrate the negative impact such a decision would have on the city’s economy. Today, the stamped $2 bill is part of the University Commencement, marking students’ transition to alumni.

Bennett also helped set the standard for alumni engagement and outreach as the Clemson Alumni Association’s first alumni field representative. His contributions earned him induction into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Distinguished Service Award from the Alumni Association in 1999.
