Longtime corporate partner establishes the Johnson Controls Building Analytics for Sustainability and Health Center

A $3 million gift from Johnson Controls and its affiliated foundation has newly established the Johnson Controls Building Analytics for Sustainability and Health Center at Clemson University, a multidisciplinary hub for innovation, education, outreach and the development of student talent for the building operations industry.

The new Center, located within the Watt Family Innovation Center, will promote the importance of using analytics to achieve healthier, more sustainable buildings. The gift also includes student scholarships and smart building research, positioning Johnson Controls as one of the University’s strategic corporate partners and building upon the company’s decades-long relationship with the University.

“Johnson Controls and Clemson University’s continued partnership is a testament to our clear visions and missions of transforming lives,” said University President Jim Clements.

Students will reap the benefits of the partnership through new hands-on learning opportunities. A newly developed building analytics for sustainability and health certificate program will complement Center activities, and students will have experiential learning opportunities in the industry, such as Creative Inquiry, capstone projects and industry engagement. A Universitywide annual call for research projects in building analytics will also be established.

“We are grateful to have the shared goals of building a talent pipeline, increasing research and augmenting awareness of this critical industry,” said Angie Leidinger, senior vice president for external affairs at Clemson.

Headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Johnson Controls is a leader in smart, healthy and sustainable building, with a global team of 100,000 employees in 150 countries. The company is contributing its OpenBlue Enterprise Manager solution to the University as a part of its gift. The award-winning digital platform is designed to leverage a building’s data to meet sustainability goals, optimize safety and security, enhance occupant health and improve productivity.

Johnson Controls Chairman and CEO George Oliver credited collaboration between the company and the University to establish the Center. “We are dedicated to creating superior campus environments and pushing the boundaries of innovation in the building industry,” he said.
