While the technology employed by Clemson University faculty and students to solve problems and discover new solutions has since evolved beyond relics like this PDP 8/F minicomputer and ASR-33 teletype — pictured here in April 1974 in service of environmental systems engineering research — the commitment to inquiry continues today.

In addition to having its status as a Carnegie R1 research institution reaffirmed in February 2025, the University hit a milestone in fiscal year 2025, surpassing $1 billion in research proposal submission value for the first time. Of the $218.5 million in externally funded competitive expenditures, $55.9 million was for sustainable environments, one of the University’s six principal innovation clusters. Continued research opportunities and growing expertise in this field draw a throughline back to work conducted on campus more than five decades ago.
