Through his sister Louisa’s marriage to the great-nephew of George Washington, Thomas Green Clemson came into possession of a chair believed to have been used by America’s first president. The Windsor chair, pictured beside Clemson at Fort Hill circa 1883, is said to have been from Camp Trenton, where the Battle of Trenton marked a major turning point in the American Revolution.

The chair is on loan to the Charleston Museum through September 20, after which it will be featured in an exhibit at the Upcountry History Museum in Greenville, South Carolina, as part of Clemson University’s broader programming commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
