Candace Hall ’10, Lyndsey Williams Mayweather ’10, April Smith ’08, Alexia Richardson ’10 and Nyamekyer Sonja Badu ’11 celebrated their 32nd birthdays in the mountains of Tennessee on a hiking trip led by fellow Clemson alum Ryan Maum ’17, who owns and operates Experience Chattanooga. Ryan shot the photo of the group on the overlook of Cumberland Mountain. “We celebrated our 19th birthdays together in Calhoun Courts and have been celebrating together ever since!” wrote Lynsey.

California: Kristen '11 and Atticus '11 Mabry

In August 2018, Kristen ’11 and Atticus ’11 Mabry ascended up the Mountaineer Route of Mount Whitney to a height of 14,505 feet.
“Unbelievably enough, there were graduates from University of South Carolina, University of Georgia and University of Florida all at the same time. The Mountaineer Route takes three days from the Whitney Portal but affords amazing views of the night sky and glacier lakes. Following the descent, we traveled through (the other) Death Valley at -282 feet. We highly recommend anyone looking to do this hike to contact Sierra Mountain Center for a guide! They made the entire experience just unbelievable.”

Scotland: Brian Callahan '99, M '01, Ph.D. '05 and Katie Callahan

Brian Callahan ’99, M ’01, Ph.D. ’05, director of Clemson Extension field operations, and Katie Callahan, director of the Clemson University Center for Watershed Excellence, visited Scotland to explore the Isle of Iona, which has been the victim of ancient Viking raids and a significant pilgrimage site for centuries. “We set off on a hike to one of the island’s amazing colorful beaches with turquoise waters, only to lose our way and walk nearly the whole perimeter of the island. It was our rugged pilgrimage of sorts with a whole lot of metaphors, considering the place!”

Africa: Breen Weir '15

“I had three weeks between jobs and decided, very last minute, to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro — the tallest mountain in Africa. We arrived at the Lemosho trail head, and about five minutes before we started our ascent, I notice the unforgettable Clemson colors and logo. The purple sweatshirt was worn by a Swahili-speaking, Tanzanian native with a friendly face. We couldn’t communicate well, but the Tiger Pride was there!”

Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity brothers Charles Rogers ’10 and Rogers Coxe ’11 and three others climbed 19,341 feet to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, known as “the Roof of Africa.”
